1. Basics

  • Name: to improve findability and consistency in the CMS, all news items must include the month and the date in the “name” field followed by the page title
  • Page title: the page title should be compelling and no longer than 15 words. Write titles for all readers not just journalists
  • Strapline: all news stories must have a strapline – this is a maximum of 25-30 word blurb that summarises the story. It should be added in the “Description” field in the “Hero” tab
  • Last updated: this will be the date that appears on the news story and the news listings. Remember to change the default 12:00am time to a few hours later to avoid the story being dated as the day before. The CMS is set to GMT+01:00
  • Page intro text: this should consist of the first couple of sentences of the news story – typically a statement summarising the announcement. Do not confuse this with the strapline
  • Body text: you can use this field to insert the remainder of your copy if you’re not adding any blocks or all copy up to the point you would like to add a content block

2. Images

  • Image sizing: refer to the table below when resizing images for your page
Hero or full width Half width Teaser
Image size 2000px x 1125px 1200px x 675px 800px x 600px
File size (max) 400kb 250kb 150kb
Format WebP WebP JPEG
  • Naming: all images should be named as a description of the image separated by hyphens. It can include the word “teaser” at the end for teaser images.
  • Folders: create a folder to store your images in the “Media” tab of the asset tree. For All Sites > images > news – followed by the year and date of the news story. The name of the folder should be the title of your news story in all lower case.
  • Alt text: add alt text to your images immediately after you upload them to avoid forgetting. It should describe what’s in the image to ensure it’s accessible
  • Hero image: remember a hero image is not compulsory. If using a hero image you must not use it again in the main body. If you only have one image, it’s your decision whether you use it as a hero image or within the story
  • Layout: If adding a hero image to our story, you must select the “50/50 Width” layout option in the “Hero” tab
  • Card colour: If not using a hero image, you must select a card colour in the “Teaser/Preview” tab. Please do not select red – this is for global Arup firm announcements
  • Teaser: add your hero image (resized for the teaser field) in the “Teaser image” field of the “Teaser/Preview” tab. If you have one image and are using it in the body but not as a hero image, please resize this appropriately and use as the teaser image
  • Twitter image and OpenGraph image: add your hero image (resized for the teaser field) in the “Twitter Image” and “Primary OpenGraph Image” fields of the “Metadata” tab. If you have one image and are using it in the body but not as a hero image, please resize this appropriately as a teaser image and add it to these fields
  • Captions: all images must have a descriptive caption to illustrate the value they serve on a page
  • Video thumbnail: if adding a video to your news story, you must create and upload a thumbnail image sized as a half width image. A thumbnail will not generate automatically

3. Shared blocks

  • Author: all news stories should have an author. There is a preset list of author blocks in the CMS that you can drag and drop into your page. They are found here: For All Sites > Blocks > News & media > authors
  • Featured item: add the “Feature – Brand hub prompt” block to the “Featured item” field on all news stories
  • Right contact prompt: In the “Right Content area”, include the “Press team contacts prompt”. This leads to a page with Arup’s media contacts
  • CTA: The penultimate block in the “Main Content area” should be a market or service CTA where relevant. This encourages readers to remain on the site after reading a story. A careers CTA could be used if more appropriate. They are found here: For All Sites > Blocks > News & media > market ctas / service ctas / careers ctas
  • Related news: The final block in the “Main Content area” should be a related news block. This will feature the four latest stories related to a category of your choosing. This could be related to a market, service, location or theme. They are found here: For All Sites > Blocks > News & media > related content markets / related service groups / related content arup and locations / related themes

4. Content blocks created for your page

  • Quotes: if you're adding quotes to your content, you should only use the Quote with Audio block to highlight key quotes, or elements of quotes. You should not add every quote into this component. It is perfectly acceptable to add quites inside speech marks i.e. "This is a quote" within the body of your article. The Quote with Audio block is designed to draw attention to what someone has said
  • Images: images should enhance your story, you do not need to add images for the sake of it. Every image you add must have a caption explaining what it is - this can include any copyright information you may need to include
